چکیده

As the impact of and demand for software increases, there is greater need for rigorous software development techniques that can be used by a typical software engineer. In order to integrate informal and formal approaches to software development, we added formal syntax and semantics definitions to existing object-oriented modeling notations. This formalization enables developers to construct object-oriented models of requirements and designs and then automatically generate formal specifications for the diagrams. This paper describes how the resulting diagrams via their specifications can be analyzed using automated techniques to validate behavior through simulation or to check for numerous properties of the diagrams, including interand intramodel consistency.

Integrating Informal and Formal Approaches to Requirements Modeling and Analysis

The Unified Modeling Language (UML) comprises several different notations for object-oriented modeling with no formal semantics attached to the individual diagrams. We have developed a generic framework for formalizing a subset of UML diagrams in terms of various formal languages, with a focus on embedded systems. We have formalized UML in terms of Promela, thus enabling analysis of the UML dia...

UML Diagrams to Object Petri Net Models: An Approach for Modeling and Analysis

Abstract. UML, being the industry standard as a common OO modeling language needs a well-defined semantic base for its notation. Formalization of the graphical notation enables numerous automated processing and analysis tasks, such as behavioral simulation and consistency checks between levels of specifications. Object Oriented Petri nets (OOPN) can provide a formal semantic framework for the U...

From UML Towards Petri Nets to Specify and Verify

UML nowadays, has emerged as the industry standard for object-oriented modeling. However, it still lacks a well-defined semantic base enabling it to perform formal verification and validation tasks. Our goal being to provide system designers a life cycle of software development integrating conviviality and rigor, we propose a methodology to specify, verify and validate using UML. This methodolo...

Formalization of UML Communication Diagrams using π-Calculus

UML is a general-purpose modeling language for object oriented systems. UML suffers from lack of semantics design due to its semi-formal structure. Formal methods have been used largely in order to deal with this problem. This paper presents a formalization of UML communication diagrams (collaboration diagrams in UML 1.x) semantics using π-calculus computation model. The formalization provides ...

The Evaluation and Design Methodology for Real Time Systems

Petri net variants are widely used as a real time systems modeling technique. Recently, UML activity diagrams have been used for the same purpose, even though the syntax and semantics of activity diagrams has not been yet fully worked out. Nevertheless, activity diagrams seem very similar to Petri net semantics. UML, being the industry standard as a common object oriented modeling language need...
